As we journey along the path of life, many of us arrive at a juncture where we feel compelled to expand who we are and how we are contributing to the world. This desire to grow beyond what incites a new level of empowerment and a new “devil” we must face arriving at what is possible. This devil comes from the natural need for homeostasis, which always leans towards the status quo, causing us to fear change. And yet, this new level holds up the promise of fulfillment.
So how can we go through this process of development with more ease? First, we must allow; allow what rises to the surface to be seen and its presence to be greeted with curiosity. Allow exploration of these new parts of self to not settle for the old definition of who we are, as that identity will not move us through this unique juncture. Allow new allies to help move us out of your comfort zone. Perhaps more importantly, allow detachment from the outcome.
Our natural tendency is to keep life safe and controlled, not wanting to leave what is familiar even though a part of us likes to change. Therefore, braving the challenges that arise from this impulse is necessary for reaching a new level. But, unfortunately, a new devil appears with the new level, and for this reason, we must learn to build the bridge we are walking while simultaneously remaining committed to the path.
